ESPN names Titans as the best fit for one of the NFL's top remaining free agents
Denny Simmons / The Tennessean / USA TODAY NETWORK

Led by general manager Ran Carthon, the Tennessee Titans have been one of the most aggressive teams in the NFL throughout the 2024 cycle of free agency.

Carthon has inked a handful of veterans capable of turning the Titans into an AFC South contender in the first year under head coach Brian Callahan. But with one major need remaining and plenty of salary cap space still available, Tennessee has been mentioned as the perfect fit for another big fish in the free agency pool.

ESPN's Matt Bowen named the best team fits for the NFL's top-14 free agents still looking for a home. In this article, Bowen linked four-time All-Pro free safety Justin Simmons to the Titans.

From ESPN: The top safety still available would be an easy fit under new Titans defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson. Simmons is a high-level communicator in the secondary with deep range and great ball skills. He has at least three interceptions in six straight seasons and is a productive starter who is strong in run support.

In Tennessee, Simmons would start opposite Amani Hooker, giving Wilson two interchangeable safeties with scheme versatility, bolstering a rapidly improving secondary that added cornerbacks L'Jarius Sneed and Chidobe Awuzie this offseason.

Elijah Molden showed flashes at times when he was lined up next to Amani Hooker in the defensive backfield in the 2023 season. However Simmons would serve as a massive upgrade at the position considering he has made the NFL's second-team All-Pro in three straight seasons and led the league in interceptions with six in the 2022 season.

Simmons, 30, has spent each of his eight seasons with the Denver Broncos after he was selected in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Simmons is the best safety still available and easily a top-10 player at his position.

In 2023 Simmons played in 15 games hauling in three interceptions with eight passes defensed, 70 tackles, two tackles for loss and one sack. He has 118 games of NFL experience, but has plenty of gas left in his tank.

The Broncos released Simmons to clear up $14.5 million in salary cap space. According to Over The Cap, the Titans still have nearly $27 million left in salary cap space.

If the Titans are able to reel in Simmons he would be the final piece to what could be considered the most talented secondary in Tennessee's history.
