The Boston Red Sox will wrap up their three-game series against the Chicago Cubs tonight. They are coming off a 17-0 win yesterday over the Cubs thanks to a breakout game by Ceddanne Rafaela who went 4-4 with two doubles, a home run, and seven RBI. Tonight they will have Tanner Houck facing Hayden Wesneski. Before yesterday’s game and today’s game, they made a flurry of moves. First yesterday they acquired first baseman Garrett Cooper from the Chicago Cubs for cash; to make room on the 40-man roster they moved Triston Casas to the 60-day injured list. Before today’s game they called up RHP Naoyuki Uwasawa and to make room they designated LHP Joely Rodriguez for assignment.

Red Sox Moves By The Numbers

1B – Garrett Cooper

Cooper is in his eighth season having played for the New York Yankees, Miami Marlins, San Diego Padres, and most recently the Chicago Cubs. The Red Sox had Cooper this past offseason but he ended up signing with the Cubs, he would play in 12 games hitting .270 with a .774 OPS; he had a double, a triple, a home run, six RBI, three runs scored, and four walks. He will provide a need at first base with Casas out a few months.

RHP – Naoyuki Uwasawa

Uwasawa last season pitched in Japan in the Pacific League appearing in 24 games going 9-9 with a 2.96 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP, and 124 strikeouts in 170 innings. He spent nine seasons pitching in Japan appearing in 173 games going 70-62 with a 3.19 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP, and 913 strikeouts in 1,118.1 innings. This spring he appeared in four games going 0-1 with a 13.03 ERA, a 2.38 WHIP, and nine strikeouts in 9.2 innings. The 30-year-old at Triple-A this season has made three starts going 2-1 with a 4.80 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, and 17 strikeouts in 15 innings.

LHP – Joely Rodriguez

Rodriguez was re-signed by the Red Sox this past offseason and made the team out of spring training over Brennan Bernadino. He has struggled appearing in 11 games going 0-1 with a 6.55 ERA, a 5.25 FIP, a 1.54 WHIP, and 11 strikeouts in 11 innings. Last season with the Red Sox he posted almost identical numbers to this season going 0-0 in 11 games with a 6.55 ERA, a 4.71 FIP, a 1.72 WHIP, and 14 strikeouts in 11 innings.
